New York and the Migraine An Urgent Care Clinic Can Help

Some medical issues need urgent care, that’s for sure. Migraines just may be one of those issues. Anyone who suffers from migraines—or knows someone who does—knows how serious this problem can be. For sufferers living in New York, it’s a good thing that we have the option of visiting an urgent care clinic in our neighborhood.

What exactly is a migraine and when is it proper to visit an urgent care clinic to be treated for them? The following is a list of questions that may help you make that determination for yourself.

What is a migraine?
Migraines are painful headaches that can take place on either one or both sides of the head. They are unlike the common headache for several reasons. The pain of a migraine is much worse than a common headache and oftentimes includes nausea.

How common are migraines?
Migraines are way too common and affect over 29.5 million Americans a year.

Are there different types of migraines
?
Yes, there are many forms of migraine headaches but the two most common types seem to be migraine-without-aura and migraine-with-aura. The difference between the two is that the migraine-without-aura means that the painful symptoms of the headache come about without warning. In a migraine-with-aura the headache may be preceded by seeing lights, blind spots, feeling a numbness or a tingling in either the hands or the face, and a weird sense of taste, touch or smell.

Is it true that migraines are more common in women than in men
?
Yes. Migraine headaches seem to affect women at a much larger rate than men. In fact, three out of four migraine sufferers are women.

What is it migraine sufferers should avoid to help keep them headache free?
Many migraine sufferers report different stressors that tend to lead to headaches. These include but are not limited to: skipped meals, the drinking of alcohol and/or caffeine, bright or flashing lights, varying over-the-counter medications, and general stress and/or fatigue.

What is the difference between a migraine and headache and a sinus headache?
Although many people confuse these types of headaches there are three simple questions to help differentiate between the two. Ask yourself these questions:

    •    Do you suffer from moderate to severe headaches?

    •    Do you suffer from nausea?

    •    Do you suffer from a sensitivity to light?

If you answered yes to at least two of these questions it is recommended that you visit an urgent care clinic for further evaluation.
